An off-duty police officer in New Jersey has been charged and jailed following allegations of a home invasion and assault on two victims last week. REBECCA SAYEGH, 32, a Toms River Township Police Officer, faces multiple charges, including home invasion burglary, two counts of assault, criminal mischief, terroristic threats, and resisting arrest, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
The incident unfolded on April 25 in Berkeley Township, where authorities were called to a domestic disturbance at approximately 11:20 p.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered that SAYEGH had allegedly smashed the front glass door of a residence, entered the property, and assaulted and threatened two individuals inside. Additionally, she reportedly damaged the hood of a vehicle belonging to one of the victims, which was parked in the driveway.
SAYEGH was taken into custody at the scene after resisting arrest. Initially charged via summons pending her first appearance in Ocean County Superior Court, she was subsequently re-charged by warrant on April 28, 2025, due to the severity of the allegations. She is currently detained at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
Ocean County Prosecutor BILLHIMER commended the Berkeley Township Police Department for their handling of the investigation.
In a contrasting incident in 2021, SAYEGH was awarded a Class B commendation for her heroic actions during a house fire. According to the Toms River Police Department, she was the first officer on the scene and successfully rescued a homeowner and their pets, earning praise for her bravery and quick response.
