Miami Beach, Florida, has successfully curbed spring break crime for the second year in a row, thanks to a viral reality TV-themed public service announcement. The city’s comprehensive “Reality Check” campaign, launched in 2025, has left residents and local businesses grateful for the efforts of city officials.
MAYOR STEVEN MEINER, who took office at the end of 2023, spearheaded the initiative after years of spring break turmoil that disrupted local businesses and frustrated residents. Collaborating with city, county, and state authorities, Meiner implemented strict measures to restore order during the 2024 and 2025 spring break seasons.
“In prior years, we literally had killings on our streets,” MEINER told Fox News Digital. “We had shootings, modified stampedes, and a level of lawlessness and chaos—people jumping on police cars. It was just not tolerable.”
The “Reality Check” video, which has garnered over 53,000 views since its release on February 4, features a cast of spring break characters eager to cause havoc in Miami Beach. However, they are quickly disappointed to learn about the city’s strict rules and enforcement measures.
The campaign included enforcing volume levels on the beach, implementing security and DUI checkpoints citywide, and imposing a 6 p.m. curfew. Additionally, $100 parking fees made it cost-prohibitive for some partiers to access popular hotspots. State troopers and county police were also enlisted to assist local law enforcement in maintaining order.
“I’d come back to Miami Beach, just not for spring break,” a cast member remarks at the end of the video.
MEINER expressed his satisfaction with the campaign’s results. “The results have been phenomenal. No killings, no shootings, no major incidents, no stampedes. From hoteliers to restaurants to businesses, everyone is appreciative. It’s been a major success for our city.”
Residents have also praised the initiative. “No matter where you go in our city, even people who live six or seven miles away from where the activity took place, nobody wanted to see their city viewed in a negative light. They’re so appreciative,” MEINER added.
Miami Beach is not alone in its efforts to shed its chaotic spring break reputation. PANAMA CITY BEACH MAYOR STUART TETTEMER told Fox News Digital that his city has also intensified its crime deterrence measures.
“Panama City Beach has taken aggressive steps to maintain order during the Spring Break period, including targeted evening beach closures, enhanced enforcement zones, mutual aid partnerships, and public-private screening efforts at Pier Park,” TETTEMER said. “PCB is committed to law and order, acting swiftly with law enforcement to keep the community safe and family-friendly, and working with responsible businesses to ensure the unruly spring break legacy stays in the past.”
