A former federal prosecutor has raised concerns about the handling of the investigation into the golf cart incident involving NFL legend JOHN ELWAY. The incident occurred at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California, where JEFFREY SPERBECK, a 62-year-old close friend and agent of Elway, fell from the back of a golf cart on March 26. SPERBECK sustained severe injuries and was transported to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he tragically passed away on Wednesday.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has launched an investigation into the incident, though no charges have been filed against JOHN ELWAY. It was later revealed that Elway has retained HARVEY STEINBERG, a prominent Denver-based attorney known for representing athletes in legal matters. The sheriff’s office stated that the incident appears to be a tragic accident, with no evidence suggesting otherwise.
However, the investigation has drawn scrutiny due to a delay in the sheriff’s office being informed of the incident. According to reports, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office was not notified until March 28, two days after the incident occurred. A Cal Fire spokesperson explained that the sheriff’s office was not initially contacted because the call was classified as a medical emergency.
NEAMA RAHMANI, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney, expressed skepticism about the handling of the case, stating that the delay in notification raises questions about the sheriff’s office’s transparency or efficiency. “Nothing else makes sense,” RAHMANI remarked, emphasizing the unusual nature of law enforcement not responding to the scene.
In response to the criticism, Riverside County Sheriff CHAD BIANCO dismissed the comments, suggesting that the former prosecutor’s remarks were unwarranted. “Maybe it’s a good thing it’s coming from a ‘former federal prosecutor.’ It appears we are all much better off with them in retirement,” BIANCO told Fox News Digital.
JOHN ELWAY publicly addressed the tragedy on Wednesday, expressing profound grief over the loss of SPERBECK. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner, and agent, JEFF SPERBECK,” Elway said. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
The SPERBECK family also released a statement, mourning the loss of their beloved family member. “We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our dear JEFF SPERBECK. He was a wonderful father, husband, brother, son, and friend to many and will be profoundly missed by all,” the family said. They also acknowledged the support of the ELWAY family during this difficult time.
JEFF SPERBECK had been a close associate of JOHN ELWAY since 1990, serving as his agent and managing his career. Over the years, SPERBECK represented numerous NFL players, including Pro Football Hall of Famers RONNIE LOTT and JIM PLUNKETT.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office has stated that it will take appropriate action based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
