A Washington state father is demanding clarity in the investigation into the untimely death of his 18-year-old daughter, LIZ HAMEL, at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) earlier this year. LIZ HAMEL was found unconscious outside a dormitory on the UCSB campus on February 14 after reportedly falling from a breezeway. She succumbed to her injuries days later, leaving her family and community in shock.
ALAIN HAMEL, LIZ‘s father, expressed his frustration and grief in an interview with FOX NEWS on Friday. He stated that while the UCSB Police Department has been empathetic and supportive, the ongoing nature of the investigation has limited the information shared with the family. “They’ve been very kind to us, but since it’s an ongoing investigation, they can’t provide us with a lot of details,” HAMEL told FOX NEWS anchor SANDRA SMITH.
In a bid to uncover the truth, HAMEL and his family reached out to the community for assistance in identifying a man who was with LIZ on the night of the incident. Within 24 hours, UCSB police were able to locate and interview the individual. “I think it was incredibly successful. Santa Barbara was so fast and helped us move the investigation forward,” HAMEL said. He emphasized that the man is not a suspect in his daughter’s death but was a person of interest who may have been with her that evening.
UCSB released a statement confirming that the individual had been interviewed and that the investigation remains active. “The investigation is still ongoing, and we cannot discuss any additional details at this time,” the university stated. The UCSB Police Department is working closely with the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office and the Sheriff’s Office to uncover the circumstances surrounding LIZ‘s death.
HAMEL shared that his daughter and the man had met at a noodle bar on the night of the incident, which was Valentine’s Day. “They were photographed together, and they left the restaurant shortly after 10:06 p.m.,” he said. LIZ was found unconscious at 10:27 p.m. after the fall.
Describing his daughter, HAMEL said, “She was our world. She was our only child, and she was everything to us. We were so lucky to have 18 years with her, and we wish we had more time.”
A tipline has been established for anyone with information related to LIZ‘s death: 805-335-3851. The family continues to seek answers and justice for their beloved daughter.
