Fatal Crash Involving Stolen U-Haul Van Near University of Delaware Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured

NEWARK, Del. — A tragic incident unfolded Tuesday afternoon near the University of Delaware campus when a stolen U-Haul van struck multiple pedestrians and a police vehicle, resulting in one fatality and several injuries, according to the Newark Police Department.

Authorities reported that officers identified a U-Haul van parked on the street around 4:30 p.m. that had been rented but not returned by its due date of March 18. The vehicle was flagged for unauthorized use on Monday. As officers attempted to apprehend the two suspects inside the van, the individuals fled the scene, driving over a curb and colliding with a marked police vehicle.

The suspects ignored police commands and exited the parking lot at high speed. Newark officers chose not to pursue the vehicle and remained at the shopping center. During their escape, the van struck two pedestrians standing near a parked car before hitting multiple other vehicles and becoming disabled.

First responders provided immediate aid to the injured pedestrians. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while another sustained serious injuries. Three additional individuals were transported to a local emergency room with non-life-threatening injuries, and three others were treated for minor injuries but declined further medical attention.

The driver and passenger of the U-Haul were detained. The driver suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized. The passenger’s condition remains undisclosed.

The Newark Police Department’s Traffic Unit is actively investigating the crash, and the affected roadways will remain closed during the investigation. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
