A harrowing incident in Poughkeepsie, New York, saw a woman and two young children narrowly avoid a manhole explosion, with the dramatic moment captured on video. LISA DAVIS, accompanied by her grandchildren, had just finished an Easter egg hunt when the explosion occurred on Saturday, as reported by ABC News.
“I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t know.’ I didn’t know where to go,” DAVIS recalled in an interview with the station. “I didn’t know what to do except grab my grandson and run.”
The footage shows DAVIS walking over the manhole cover while pushing a stroller alongside a young child. Moments later, the cover erupted, sending debris flying into the air. The Poughkeepsie Fire Department confirmed that another manhole on the same block also exploded, narrowly missing three pedestrians.
High levels of carbon monoxide were detected in multiple buildings following the incident, prompting the evacuation of all occupants on the block until the gas levels could be mitigated.
A spokesperson for CENTRAL HUDSON GAS & ELECTRIC CORP. later explained to Mid Hudson News that the explosion was caused by an electrical fault in an underground cable and was unrelated to the natural gas distribution system. “While manhole events stemming from electrical faults are not uncommon, they can still pose risks of damage or injury. Fortunately, we’ve been informed that no one was hurt in this instance,” the spokesperson said.
