PHARR, TEXAS — U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Pharr International Bridge made a significant drug bust on April 11, uncovering over $14 million worth of methamphetamine concealed in a shipment of vegetables. The illicit drugs were hidden within a cargo of bell peppers and cucumbers arriving from Mexico.

During a routine inspection of a tractor-trailer entering the United States, CBP officers referred the vehicle for secondary inspection. Utilizing non-intrusive inspection technology and a canine team, officers discovered approximately 1,635 pounds of methamphetamine distributed across 300 packages. The narcotics and the vehicle were seized, and the case was handed over to Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) for further investigation.

CARLOS RODRIGUEZ, Port Director, emphasized the importance of the seizure, stating, “Our CBP officers continue to use all tools and resources to safeguard our borders by preventing these harmful narcotics from reaching America’s streets.”

This bust follows a broader trend of increased drug seizures at the U.S.-Mexico border. In March, CBP reported a 24% rise in fentanyl seizures, totaling 650 pounds. Nationwide, seizures of cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana surged by 47% compared to February. Specifically, cocaine seizures increased by 32%, while methamphetamine seizures skyrocketed by 72%.

The Pharr International Bridge, a critical trade route between South Texas and Mexico, remains a focal point for CBP’s efforts to combat drug trafficking.
